☞在这句话里，brush aside表示“无视”的意思，同“brush away”。brush作名词意为“刷子”，做动词意为“擦除，掠过”，加上“aside/away”这类带方位意义的介词，形象地表达了“搁置一边”的意思。再看一下brush和其它介词搭配有什么意思吧：

1. brush back：往后刷

He brushed his hair back with both hands.
他用两手把头发往后捋。

2.brush away：拭去

She brushed away tears as she spoke of him.
谈到他时，她拭去了脸上的泪水。

3.brush off：刷掉；掸掉

He brushed the snow off the windshield.
他刮掉了挡风玻璃上的雪。

☞注意一下criticism的两层主要意思：在具体表示“批评；批判；指责”时可数，复数形式表示屡遭批评；而表示“评论”时不可数，尤指对书或戏剧等的评论。

☞in my opinion常用来引出观点，意为“依我看来；据我看来”，是一个比较主观、用得非常广泛的表达方法，但是如果从英文表达习惯来看，我们在表达自己的观点时还是少用“I think/as far as I'm concerned”等引导语为好，西方提倡直截了当地表达观点。

☞bring about意为“引起、带来”。其实单独用bring也可以表示“带来”的意思，常见搭配如bring ... to/on ...。总地来说，加上介词以后就会让动词的表意更加形象、生动、具体，会不会恰当地使用介词也是区分英语学习者水平的一个关键因素。

☞上文中的break down意为“出毛病、损坏”，尤指机器或车辆出故障。break down还可以表示“物质分解”，例如：

The oil is attacked by naturally occurring microbes which break it down.
原油受到了自然产生的分解油类物质的微生物的侵蚀。

☞引申来看，这个词组也可以表示“讨论、关系或系统的失败，破裂或失灵”，常用于表示婚姻破裂。同义词有：collapse，fall apart。

Paola's marriage broke down.
葆拉的婚姻破裂了。

☞这个词组也适用于表达“感情失控”。

The young woman broke down in tears.
这名年轻妇人痛哭流涕。

☞by no means表示“一点也没有、绝不”。表达类似含义的词组还有：not by any means/by no manner of means等。这个词组的反义词为：by all means，表示“一定/完全可以”。

☞means是一个比较特殊的名词，虽然它的末尾带了“s”，但并不代表它是“mean”的复数，means作“方法、手段、工具”解时单复数同形。所以大家看到“a means of doing something”时不要觉得奇怪。

The move is a means to fight crime.

采取这项举措是为了打击犯罪。

In this passage, good writing is compared to fine food.
在这篇文章中，优秀的写作被比作美食。

☞be compared to在这里表示“被比作”。同学们需要注意compare to和compare with的区别。compare to是“比作”，表示被比较的两样东西很相似。例如：

I can only compare the experience to falling in love.
我只能把这段经历比作坠入爱河。

而compare with则是“相比较”的意思，一般情况下被比较的两者是有优劣之分的。

The flowers here do not compare with those at home.
这儿的花比不上家乡的花。
